Things to do in Ibiza: the short list the locals quietly keep

Beyond the headline beach clubs and the obvious sunset bars, the actual rotation that the people who live the island year round come back to.

Most lists of things to do in Ibiza are written by people who flew in for three days and tried to see everything. The locals' list is shorter and quieter. It begins with a slow morning at the Saturday market in Las Dalias, ends with a swim at Aigues Blanques, and rarely involves the places featured in the in flight magazine. The point of Ibiza is not the checklist. The point is finding a rhythm that makes the days feel longer.

On the water the consistent pick is a long day to Formentera. Anchor off Espalmador in the morning, lunch at Juan y Andrea or Beso Beach, then drift back to Cala Saona in the late afternoon and Es Vedra at sunset. This route has been the local standard for fifteen years and there is a reason it has not been replaced. It works. The variation that locals add is to start the day on the east coast around Tagomago when the first half of the morning is calm.

On land the list rotates with the season. Early June is for hikes around Sant Joan and lunch at La Paloma. Late June is for cinema at Atzaro under the stars. July is for late afternoon at Beach House in Talamanca, away from the heavier scene at Cala Jondal. August is for the long lunch tradition at Es Torrent. September is for cycling the rural roads in the morning and dinner at Aubergine in the evening.

The best advice anyone has ever given a first time visitor is to do less. Pick three places that interest you and go to each one twice. The island is not large. The repeat visit is where the relationship with a beach, a restaurant or a captain actually starts. The list locals keep is short because they have been here long enough to know that the same Tuesday lunch in the same cove, three years in a row, is what most weeks at home are missing.
